Part-time AI Research Engineer — Foundation Models, Graphs & RL
Work directly on core AI algorithms — graph-based representations, foundation models for robotics (not language models), and reinforcement learning — then help move the methods that work onto physical hardware. Theory and practice, end to end, on a platform headed for real-world deployment rather than a lab demo.
What you'll do
- Design algorithms, and train and evaluate policies that co-plan a heavy machine's hierarchical tasks — navigating the base and manipulating the arm — with a human operator in the loop (shared autonomy)
- Work with the team to integrate these solutions into our future products
Type
Part-time, ~2 days/week, 8 months, starting ASAP
Location
Aerospace Mechatronics Lab, McGill University, Montréal — in person preferred, hybrid available
Ideal for
Master's and PhD students who want real R&D, not a line on a CV
Remuneration
Negotiable, depending on qualifications
Selection
A 20-minute intro call, then a technical discussion of a project you describe in your application — no surprise algorithm puzzles or unpaid take-home
Desired skill set
- AI/ML fundamentals: graphs, foundation models, reinforcement learning
- Knowledge or experience with perception and vision systems
- Programming in Python, Rust, and/or C/C++
